You have the right to ask for a copy of any personal information we hold about you, and to ask for it to be corrected if you think it is wrong.

Backstory Ltd (we, us, our) complies with the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020 (the Act) when dealing with personal information. We understand that your privacy is important to you and that you care about how your personal and non-personal information is used and shared online. We respect and value the privacy of everyone who use our applications and will only collect and use information in ways that are useful to you and in a manner consistent with your rights and obligations under the law.

This policy sets out how we will collect, use, disclose and protect your personal information. It applies to our website, software and applications.  

This policy does not limit or exclude any of your rights under the Act.  If you wish to seek further information on the Act, see www.privacy.org.nz.

We may change this policy by uploading a revised policy onto the website.  The change will apply from the date that we upload the revised policy.

Glossary

Account - Created by the user during the registration process.

Application - The software or website being utilised.

Other Information - Any non personal information collected in the course of using the application.

Personal Information - Any information about an identifiable individual.  It includes, but limited to, name, address details, and personal preferences.

Registration - Process for user to create an account for using the application.

User - Individual using the application.

Your Personal Information

We collect personal information from you, including information about your:

  • name
  • contact information such as email address or physical address

Typically, we would collect this personal information directly from you. However, in some instances, your personal information may be provided by another registered user.    

We collect your personal information in order to:

  • register you to use the application
  • know who owns the other information being collected
  • add contact details to any reports generated
  • operate, maintain and improve our systems  
  • communicate with you, including to notify you of updates to the application  
  • assist with the resolution of technical support issues
  • respond to communications from you, including a complaint
  • manage our business  

The application may also collect information about usage. Site statistics allow us to assess the number of visitors to different sections of the site, identify what information is of interest, monitor system performance, and help us make the site more useful. This information is aggregated and doesn’t identify any individual. We also may use various technologies, including cookies and other tracking tools, to collect and store information about you when you use the Application. Cookies and other tracking tools allow us to store information (including your Personal Information) in a file on the device you use to access the Application. We use cookies and other tracking tools to deliver information and content specific to your interests in order to improve your experience of using our Application.

Storing Your Personal Information

We will hold your personal information. It will also be held on our behalf by our service provider and it will be stored in Amazon Web Services in Sydney.

Your information will only be viewable by authorised personnel who have a genuine need to see it to provide and maintain the service. Authorised site administrators will be able to see information for the purposes of maintaining the service and, where relevant, assisting with help requests.

Sharing Your Personal Information

We may share your personal information to:

  • any business that supports us, our services and products, including any person that hosts or maintains any underlying IT system or data centre that we use to provide the website or other services and products
  • a person who can require us to supply your personal information (e.g. a regulatory authority)
  • any other person authorised by the Act or another law (e.g. a law enforcement agency)
  • third parties, in the event that we sell, merge, purchase or transfer any part or all of our business or assets. If a change happens to our business, then the new owners may use your personal information in the same way as set out in this privacy policy.
  • any other person authorised by you.

Protecting Your Personal Information

We take reasonable steps to keep your personal information safe from loss, unauthorised access, or other misuse.

We will keep your information for as long as is necessary to fulfil the purpose for which this information was collected and any other permitted linked purposes. Our retention periods are also based on our business needs and relevant laws. For example, we may be required to keep some of your personal information for specified periods in order to comply with laws relating to financial reporting.
